KaplanMD Perfect Pout Lipstick is the Sunscreen You Won’t Forget

I’ve always thought I do a pretty ok job with sun protection – that is, right up until this year. Our ‘new’ (ok, not so new at this point) house is so close to my office that it would be ridiculous to drive, so this is my first full summer of walking/biking to work full time. In other words I’m spending a lot more time outdoors than I used to, and the quick swipe of sunscreen on my face and arms just isn’t enough these days. I’m gradually working my way through different sunscreens to see which one makes me smell the least like a pina colada, but I’ve also been missing an important piece – suncare for my lips. It’s just something I never really think about until it’s already too late (womp womp). Luckily Kaplan MD just came out with their new Perfect Pout Lipstick, which is a lip treatment, lip color & sunscreen all rolled into one.  They sent me one to test out and it’s become a permanent fixture in my everyday purse.

The packaging design for the lipstick is pretty cool – the silver tube looks very chic, but it seems like it was designed with ergonomics in mind too. Twisting the base flips the top open and spins up the product, so it can be operated one-handed. It also has a textured grip on the barrel. The casing is made of high-quality plastic, so it’s not too heavy.

As of now, there are six colors in the Perfect Pout lineup including one clear balm, with names inspired by locations around Los Angeles. I’m very into natural looks right now, so I picked Beverly, a sheer brown-based pink that’s very close to my natural lip color. It’s a great shade for when I’m rocking a natural look or even when I’m not wearing any other makeup at all. Maybe it’s just me but I always feel odd wearing an obvious lip color when I’m otherwise makeup-less. It has the teensiest bit of shimmer to it, which gives it some depth without being an in-your-face glossy finish.

Likewise, the texture feels really nice – more like a balm than a lipstick. That plus all the skincare benefits make it a perfect go-to formula. It has lots of moisturizing ingredients like squalane, beeswax and hyaluronic spheres to keep your lips looking smooth and hydrated. Even better, it has SPF 30 to stave off the sun damage (and sunburned lips, which are NO FUN). A slight hint of peppermint in it smells nice and feels cooling on the lips.

In Short: Basically everything your lips need, all in one little silver tube. I’ll take one of each, please.
