Review: Tom Ford Eyeshadow Quad in Silvered Topaz

[cf-shortcode plugin=”acf” field=”affiliate_link”]

I had this out so I could compare the colors to my new Charlotte Tilbury Rock Chick eyeshadow quad – and realized that I haven’t reviewed Silvered Topaz yet! That’s an oversight that needs to be corrected immediately, so here we are. I had hestitated to review my other TF quads because some of them are now discontinued, but Silvered Topaz is part of the permanent lineup and still available.

Packaging

Tom Ford Silvered Topaz

I won’t go through the whole packaging spiel on this one, since I’ve already covered that when I reviewed Orchid Haze. Silvered Topaz has all the same things going on – a weighty, luxe feel with minimalist styling. I’d prefer the compact to be a bit smaller though, since it takes up quite a bit of room in my drawers. Maybe one day cosmetic companies will hear my plea to leave out the mini applicators. One new thing I’ve noticed since the last review is a neat feature of the compact. The lid can fold back all the way, and when you do that it tilts the pans up a little bit toward you – which makes it a bit easier to see and use if it’s sitting on the table.

Colors

Tom Ford Silvered TopazIf you’re a fan of slightly cool-toned neutrals like I am, this is a fantastic quad. Like a lot of the quads in the permanent lineup, this one has a pressed glitter, two shimmers and a matte shade.

  • Top left – champagne glitter
  • Top right – silvery taupe shimmer
  • Bottom left – cool medium brown shimmer
  • Bottom right – deep brown matte

The three non-glitter shades have a beautiful finish for everyday wear. The fact that the lightest shade is glitter means that if I wear this to work I usually end up pulling a light color from elsewhere to use as a highlight shade. For something more dramatic or dressy, the glitter is absolutely gorgeous; it’s mostly glitter with just a hint of a cream-colored base, so you can layer it over the other shades without altering the colors too much, and use it as an inner corner highlight. You could probably find similar colors in other lines, but I like the convenience of having them in a handy quad.

Texture & Wear

Tom Ford Silvered Topaz SwatchesIf you’ve used Tom Ford quads before, you can expect the same from this one. The colors are very nicely pigmented, soft and blend effortlessly. The matte shade feels just a little bit more dry than the shimmers. For the glitter shade, as long as I don’t load up the brush too much and pat it on (vs sweeping it on), it doesn’t really have any fallout. It does give my brushes glitter herpes, so be prepared to wash your brush before the next time you use it! Over primer (I use NARS or Lorac) it wears all day with no fading or creasing.

In Short: If you already have a ton of neutrals in your collection, you may want to double-check that you don’t already own similar colors. But if you do, the fantastic texture and finish make it worth owning anyway!

I have never tried TF shadows…only have the brushes :P :D I think other than Cocoa Mirage (hopefully I got the name right) everything else has a bit of shimmer in it…is one reason why I hesitate to pick these up. I loved your eye makeup look,, though – quite subtle and pretty!

    Glitter herpes :P :P :D :D :D

Thanks for the lovely compliment! You’re right about the shimmers – most of the Tom Ford quads have a pressed glitter shade, but they’re one of the more sophisticated glitters I’ve found. Orchid Haze has shimmer but no all-out glitter so that’s an option too!

I have read that a lot…shimmer for grown-ups :D The TF counter at my Nordstrom doesn’t have the quads..well has only lipstick and nail polishes. Would have loved to try them out..
